Experience the Magic of Ägeri Market: A Celebration Like No Other

Updated: Sep 5

Every September, something magical happens in Unterägeri. The streets close to traffic, the scent of sizzling food fills the air, and the sound of laughter and music echoes through the village. It can only mean one thing: Ägeri Market is back! This vibrant, two-day market isn’t just an event; it’s a beloved tradition with roots stretching back to 1809, when it began as a cattle and horse market. It was the place where farmers gathered, animals were traded, and news was shared. These days, while the cows have moved on, the spirit of celebration is stronger than ever.

When Does It Happen?

The Ägeri Market & Chilbi are the highlight of early autumn in Unterägeri - a tradition that brings the whole valley together.

The Chilbi rides kick off on Saturday, September 6, at 13:00, lighting up the weekend with fun for kids, sweet cotton candy, and plenty of thrills for teens.

By Sunday, September 7, from 11:00, the Ägeri Market takes over the village: stalls line the streets, the scent of sizzling food fills the air, and live music creates a festive buzz that lasts all day. The main road is closed to traffic, and Unterägeri transforms into a giant playground of food, music, rides, and community spirit.

A Feast for the Senses

Let’s talk food because you’re going to want to come hungry! Here are some must-try delights:

  • Padi Burger: Famous in these parts and rightly so. Juicy, messy, and totally worth the wait. Every burger sold supports the local Pfadi (boy and girls Scouts).

  • Thai Food Stand: Spicy, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The pad Thai and curry are local favorites.

  • Raclette: Melted cheese magic, served up proudly by the secondary school students. It’s comfort on a plate and a great way to support the community.

You’ll also find handmade crafts, quirky gifts, clothes, jewelry, and more as you wander through the colorful stalls. It's the kind of market where one minute you're buying socks, and the next you're dancing to a street band with a churro in hand.

The Sweet Star: Magenbrot

Don’t leave without grabbing a bag of Magenbrot, a beloved Swiss-German treat that’s more like gingerbread than bread. These soft, spiced bites are flavored with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and star anise, and glazed with a light chocolatey coating.

Traditionally believed to help digestion, they’re now just known for being delicious. Sweet, chewy, and full of nostalgia, this is one treat you’ll come back for every year.

Screams, Thrills & Teen Spirit

As the sun goes down, the Markt lights up. You’ll hear screams echo into the night from thrill rides like “Freak,” a favorite for the brave and bold. The air buzzes with excitement as teens from around the valley gather. This is the place to be seen, hang with friends, and soak up the late-summer energy.

Monday: A Local Secret

Here’s a sweet local tip: kids in Unterägeri get Monday off school, giving families one more chance to enjoy the rides and treats in a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s quieter, calmer, and a perfect way to wrap up the weekend.

Come for the Market, Stay for the Magic

Whether you’re biting into a Padi Burger, spinning on a ride, catching up with old friends, or sipping something bubbly under the lights, the Ägeri Market is where the village comes together.
