August 1st: why we celebrate it and where in the Valley can we enjoy it 🇨🇭

I look forward to sharing with you the importance of August 1st and why Switzerland celebrates this special day each year. Recently becoming Swiss myself, I had to learn about this historic moment during my citizenship journey, and I completely understand why it has become such an important celebration across the country.

The story behind Switzerland’s founding, the coming together at the famous Rütli Meadow, and the spirit of community and independence behind it all was honestly one of my favourite things to learn about. So let me first share a little of the history behind Swiss National Day… and then I have some wonderful ideas on how you can experience it for yourself this year.

The Story Behind August 1st

The story takes us back to the year 1291, a time when the area we now know as Switzerland was made up of small independent regions and mountain communities rather than one united country.

Life in the Alps was not easy. Communities relied heavily on farming, mountain passes, and trade routes to survive. One of the most important trade connections in Europe at the time was the route through the Gotthard Pass, linking northern and southern Europe. Protecting these routes was extremely important both economically and strategically. At the same time, powerful ruling families, especially the Habsburgs, were trying to increase their control over the region. The smaller mountain cantons feared losing their independence, local decision-making, and rights.

This is where the story of the three original cantons, Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden, becomes so important. According to Swiss history and legend, representatives from these cantons gathered at the famous Rütli Meadow above Lake Lucerne. They agreed to support and defend one another if outside powers attempted to take control. Together, they created what became known as the Federal Charter of 1291, known today as the Bundesbrief von 1291.

The agreement was about much more than military protection. It represented trust, cooperation, local independence, and the idea that different communities could work together while still maintaining their own identities and traditions.

Over time, more cantons joined together and Switzerland slowly evolved into the country we know today. But the gathering at RĂĽtli remains the symbolic beginning of Switzerland and the reason August 1st became Swiss National Day. You can virtually visit RĂĽtli by visiting this link https://sgg-ssup.ch/en/social-cohesion/rutli/ Wonderful Ways to Celebrate August 1st

Adventurous Families who want to experience RĂĽtli

If you really want to connect with the story behind Switzerland’s founding, visiting the famous Rütli Meadow is such a special experience. This is the symbolic birthplace of Switzerland where the original cantons are said to have come together in 1291. Many families combine the experience with hiking and a boat ride across Lake Lucerne.

Common Starting Point

Most people begin from: Brunnen or Treib on Lake Lucerne

You can take a boat directly to the Rütli landing stage and either:

  • Visit the meadow only

  • Hike to Seelisberg

  • Complete part of the famous Weg der Schweiz trail

A scenic hiking route created to celebrate Switzerland’s 700th anniversary.

The trail passes through the founding cantons and symbolically represents all 26 Swiss cantons along the route.

It’s such a beautiful way to combine Swiss history, hiking, lakes, and mountain scenery in one experience.

However you decide to celebrate, August 1st is such a beautiful opportunity to experience Swiss traditions, community spirit, history, and the incredible landscapes that make Switzerland so special. If you are here on the first, get out and enjoy one of these super day outs.
