In the heart of Unterägeri stands Kreuzmühle, a bakery with a history as rich as the breads that come out of its ovens. Today, it is proudly run by the 7th generation of the Iten family, a name that has deep roots here in the Ägeri Valley. In fact, Iten is one of the most common surnames you’ll hear in the area – and nowhere is it tied more closely to tradition than at this bakery.
Kreuzmühle isn’t just about bread; it’s a cornerstone of community life. Did you know that the famous Baddjöggel figure – a beloved part of local Fasnacht celebrations – was inspired by none other than Jakob Iten, you may have seen him hanging above the Alteschulhaus during Fasnacht. That playful legacy lives on, alongside the bakery’s commitment to supporting countless local events with their world-renowned breads and baked specialties.
Of course, tradition isn’t the only thing baking here – Kreuzmühle also delights in surprising its customers with new treats. One of my personal favorites … The Zimtrose. Imagine the soft, sweet swirl of an American cinnamon roll, but with a Swiss twist that makes it simply irresistible. It’s the perfect companion to your morning coffee or an afternoon break.
So next time you’re in Unterägeri, stop by Kreuzmühle – taste a piece of history, enjoy a Zimtrose, and see why this bakery has been at the heart of the valley for generations.
