Coming together for the rights of dogs and dog owners: Meet the New Face of Hundeverein Ägerital

If you have ever felt like your dog needs a bigger circle of friends (or you have wished for one yourself), this month's highlight is for you. I sat down with Yvonne Finckh, who took over as Co-Präsidentin of the Hundeverein Oberägeri this June, to talk about what the club does, why it matters right now, and how you can get involved.

Yvonne came into the role with a clear sense of purpose. She wants the Verein to keep growing, not just in numbers but in spirit. As Yvonne puts it, this is exactly why dog owners should become members of Hundeverein-Aegerital.ch: to meet like-minded people and to bring shared interests to life together.

At its heart, the Hundeverein exists to connect dog owners and give dogs a proper chance to socialize. That is not only a nice way to meet new people (which, as any expat knows, can take real effort in a new place), but it is genuinely good for the dogs too. Regular contact with other dogs helps keep them balanced and happy. The club brings this to life through group walks, informative meetups on topics dog owners actually care about, and a few Parcours (Obstacle course) events throughout the year.

There is also a more urgent thread running through this year's activities. Readers will remember the leash regulations (Leinenpflicht) that were introduced in Oberägeri earlier this year, a topic that stirred up plenty of conversation in the valley. One of Yvonne's goals as co-president is to help the Verein speak with a stronger, more unified voice on exactly this kind of issue. The more active members the club has, the more leverage it carries, both to push back on the current leash rules and to advocate for things that would genuinely benefit dogs and their owners, like a dedicated off-leash area.

Joining is refreshingly simple and inexpensive. Membership costs just 40 francs a year, and that fee goes directly toward supporting the Verein's goals. As a member, you are invited to all club events and get to meet fellow dog owners. A word for the newer arrivals in the valley: gatherings are held primarily in German, so this is also a low-pressure, friendly setting to practice your language skills. Speaking other languages is absolutely fine too, nobody will turn you away for it, but keep in mind that presentations and organized gatherings will be held in German as the primary language.

A final important note, member of the Hundeverein or not: On September 7, a Gemeindeversammlung will take place in Oberägeri, and the leash regulations are on the agenda for a vote. If you would like to see the rules reconsidered, showing up matters, and this applies even if you are not eligible to vote yourself. A full room sends its own message. Being present, sharing why this issue affects you and your dog, is one of the clearest ways to make sure the community's voice is actually heard.
