You've seen the flyers all around town, but what is the Morgarten Spektakel? We have the answer, expect an open-air theatre production performed at the actual Morgarten monument on the Ägerisee, the historic site where in 1315 Schwyz farmers famously outmanoeuvred the Habsburgs. A theme that keeps popping up in a different manner in our valley.

This year's play, written by Paul Steinmann and Annette Windlin and directed by Windlin, takes that history and drops it into a very contemporary story. A fictional investment group proposes building a luxury resort next to the monument. The village initially votes to approve it. Then the questions start. It is billed as a witty, ironic look at Swiss identity, democracy, and who gets to decide what happens to a place that belongs to everyone and no one at the same time. Over 40 local amateur actors are involved, and the setting alone makes it worth the trip.

Performances last 90 minutes with no intermission and are recommended for ages 14 and up. The grandstand is covered, but evenings can be cool so bring a warm layer. A theatre restaurant is on site if you want to make an evening of it. There is no parking at the venue, but a free shuttle runs from Zug and Sattel.
